My Love
Yesterday my staff asked me the things I like. The list was long – cupcakes, cotton candy, travel, staying in expensive hotels, high thread count sheets, steak, red lipstick, high heels, and on and on and on.
…..but the list of things I love is much shorter, family, friends, and what I do. Shanika Butts of SJB Weddings and Events and The Bridal House recently posted something on her blog about her love of planning. WOW, that posting really hit home for me.
I love what I do. Let me say that again, I love what I do. To be able to say that is monumental for me. So many criticized me for having the store, wanting to do this for less money, more hours than what I did for 14 years. They asked why, how – they simply could not…would not embrace my vision or understand. For me its more than the beautiful paper, its the textures, colors and designs, its the customers who trust us to make their important event come to life, its the vendors who work hard to make us look good, its knowing I FINALLY have the staff who works hard not just for me, but for their own satisfaction. Its knowing that my work is appreciated and my ideas considered; that all the research and time and sacrifices were, and will continue to be, worthwhile.
The past three years have been filled with good times and bad, often more bad than good, but the last six months, and especially the last six weeks, have been some of the best times I have had in years. Why?
Friends and family who are supportive and loving
A staff who cares so much and works hard to help me realize my dreams…and theirs
Customers who allow me to be creative and challenge me
Industry people who are like minded
Being able to finally accept things for what they are and enjoy the moment – thanks Dr. Rogina Scott-Franklin!
Being able to laugh again, I mean really laugh and enjoy who I am and what I do
No, life is not perfect, but it is good, really good right now and I am very thankful for that and everyone who helps make it that way for me each day.
May each of you do what you love as a career, personally or both.
Here’s to love.
